It has been a decent amount of time since I've recorded much less put out a DJ mix to be heard by open ears. This mix is the result of weeks of playing around with some techy house, minimal breaks and a load of spaced out sounds. More than some, this mix takes you on a journey of sorts with a definite beginning, middle and end.
This mix was featured on the Latin Underground Show earlier in December of 2013 as a part of the weekend prohgraming on www.clubevibez.co.uk.
Astronaut Disco created the visual stimuli for a wonderful night of getting down at one of LA's most amazing underground house music events. It is always an honor to get down at these and is one of the few parties that we do our stuff for.
On this night the crew brought out 3 digital projectors to hit one large all. The left and right projectors were slaved of each other with one showing a flipped image. The third projector filled the center space between the other projectors.
On the night before Thanksgiving Astronaut Disco was again humbled and thrilled to be asked to participate in this very special once a year event called Thanksgivends. The party brings together dozens of LA's most solid DJs and other talent for an all, massive out multi-room getdown. Astronaut Disco was invited to put up the visuals for one of the larger rooms featuring more classic Disco, Hip Hop and Electro sounds.
We ran three projectors ran by two MacBook Pros running VDMX5 plus a couple classic overhead projectors throwing up stencils with colored gels. Big thanks to Richard E and Prefyx for the copiloting throughout the night. Also a big thanks to all the DJ and the Thanksgivends crew for inviting us out. Enjoy the little video and pics from the night below.
I first took pictures of the edges of buildings, benches, trees bushes, whatever as long as there is either sky in the background or some other static background used in all photos. Objects are to take up only the edge of a frame in the camera lens. Once on the computer I used Photoshop to duplicate, rotate and arrange the edges with content into an interesting object that fills the center of the page.
As a last step hues and additional coloring are manipulated and added.
While working on another project, a music video for a local beat maker I followed a tagent that came accross during the process that I just had to follow. These images are the result. Original source material is video from a variety of classic Ninja themed videogames. Using a couple pieces of software, a digital camera and 8 hours of late night darkness I came up with these.
The whole Astronaut Disco outfit was stoked on the opportunity to dazzle retinas at the 10 Year Anniversary of Afro Funke. We did some projections onto the side of the buildings adjacent to and including the venue. Inside was a live show from Ozomatli.
Because of the power convertor not quite working as planned I was only able to set up one projector for most of the evening so the result was not exactly the vision we had in mind but we had a great time projecting from accross the street regardless.
